What happened

On the evening of June 12, 2026, Music Station (a long-running Japanese live music TV show on the network TV Asahi) opened with a rare team-up between two idol groups (pop acts whose members are marketed individually to fans), Naniwa Danshi and A! e group. Both come from western Japan's Kansai region and the same talent agency, and they covered two hits by senior labelmates: 'Zukkoke Otokomichi' by SUPER EIGHT and 'Flower' by KinKi Kids.

Naniwa Danshi also gave the TV premiere of a new song, 'Gimme The Day', alongside their 5th-anniversary track 'Celebrate'. A! e group performed 'Dekoboko Life', the theme song for their first lead film.

Why it is trending now

The spike came because several draws landed on one night. A! e group's first starring film, a live-action Osomatsu-san movie (based on a well-known Japanese comedy anime/manga franchise), opened in theaters the very same day.

Its theme song getting a live national-TV airing created a feedback loop between film fans and idol fans. Naniwa Danshi, meanwhile, were days away from releasing their fifth album on June 17, so the broadcast also doubled as promotion. The novelty of two Kansai idol groups sharing a live stage gave the night a sense of occasion that pushed posts before air time.

How fans reacted

Reaction on X (formerly Twitter) was overwhelmingly celebratory. Fans called the team-up a dream collaboration and praised its distinctly Kansai energy, while light comic moments between members drew laughs. Posts about other acts — Ayumu Imazu covering Michael Jackson, NiziU, and ORANGE RANGE's new song — added to the volume. Criticism was rare; the mood was a live, real-time party.

What to watch next:

Watch whether the same-day momentum lifts both A!e group's film at the box office and Naniwa Danshi's June 17 album, and whether this Kansai idol pairing leads to further joint appearances.
