Nippombashi Street Festa (commonly called 'Stofes') is Japan's largest cosplay festival, held annually in Osaka's Den Den Town — the city's famous electronics and anime merchandise district. Today, May 17, 2026, marks the 19th edition of the event, and social media is flooded with real-time photos and updates from the venue.

The centerpiece of the festival is a cosplay parade through Sakai-suji, one of Osaka's main streets, which is closed to traffic from 11:00 to 15:30. This year, 500 cosplayers participated in the parade, drawing crowds that lined the street to watch. Attendance last year reached approximately 220,000 people, making it a genuine mass-participation cultural event rather than a niche gathering.

The cosplay on display spans a wide range of popular anime and game franchises. Social media posts today have featured characters from Yu-Gi-Oh! (Black Magician Girl), Persona 5 (Joker), Blue Archive, NIKKE, Pretty Cure, and Street Fighter, among many others. The variety reflects the breadth of Japan's current anime and gaming culture.

Beyond cosplay, the event includes live music stages. J-pop idol group NMB48 performed at the opening stage and is scheduled to close the evening program at 19:30–20:00. A separate evening event, 'Street Festa 2026 SIDE-B,' is also planned. The festival is being livestreamed on NicoNico Live and YouTube, making it accessible to fans who cannot attend in person.

Entry to watch the event is free. Those wishing to participate as cosplayers or photographers pay a ¥3,300 fee. Official changing rooms are available from 10:00 to 17:30.

What to watch next: The evening stage performances and SIDE-B event will keep the buzz going through tonight. Cosplay photo compilations from today's parade are expected to circulate widely on X and other platforms over the coming days, as they do every year after the festival.
