What happened

During Nintendo Direct JP 2026. 6. 9 (streamed June 9, 2026 at 11pm JST), Nintendo revealed two surprise remakes back to back.

The first is Embodiment of Scarlet Devil: New Classic, the first-ever remake in the Touhou Project series — a long-running fan-made bullet-hell shooting game franchise created by ZUN (the solo developer behind doujin circle Shanghai Alice). ZUN himself rebuilt the game, which arrives on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Steam on September 10, 2026, priced at 1,990 yen (standard) and 2,966 yen (deluxe). The second is a full remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the celebrated action-adventure originally released on the Nintendo 64 in 1998.

The remake is coming to Switch 2 within 2026 and closed out the broadcast.

Why it is trending now

The Touhou news landed hardest because the series had never received a remake in over two decades, and having ZUN personally rebuild his origin game — and bring it to consoles — felt almost impossible to longtime fans. Stacking that reveal alongside an Ocarina of Time remake in the same show set off both shooter doujin fans and mainstream Nintendo fans at once, pushing "remake" to the top of conversation.

How fans reacted

Japanese players described the Touhou reveal as so surreal it "felt like fake news," while the BGM being kept in both original and newly arranged form drew extra excitement. Ocarina of Time fans simply offered congratulations, and the broadcast slotting it as the finale impressed even skeptics. The double reveal also triggered a wave of wishlist posts demanding remakes of other beloved franchises.

What to watch next:

Watch for the Touhou remake's September 10 launch and further detail on its rebuilt soundtrack, restored 4K character art, and how faithfully it preserves the original. For Zelda fans, the open question is the Ocarina of Time remake's exact 2026 release date and how its higher-fidelity visuals handle the game's famously eerie enemies.
