May 27, 2026 marks exactly 40 years since the original Dragon Quest launched in Japan, and Square Enix chose the anniversary to deliver the first meaningful update on the long-awaited Dragon Quest XII. A 10-minute special stream on the official YouTube channel at 22:00 JST revealed new in-development footage and confirmed that the project has undergone a significant reset. The game was originally announced on May 27, 2021 — the 35th anniversary — under the subtitle 'The Flames of Fate,' with producers describing it as a darker, more mature entry in the series.

That version has been scrapped. The new subtitle is 'Beyond Dreams', the logo has been redesigned, and the development team structure has changed. Square Enix described the new direction as 'bright and exciting,' a notable departure from the previously promised tone.

Despite the new footage, no release date or target platforms have been announced. The official messaging acknowledged that 'it will take a while longer,' signaling that the game remains in early-to-mid development. Fans who have been waiting since 2021 are now effectively resetting their expectations.

The same broadcast also confirmed Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age — Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2, with a release date of September 24, 2026. A new Dragon Quest Monsters 4 title was also announced as a surprise, making the 40th anniversary stream one of the most content-rich Dragon Quest events in years.

What to watch next: Square Enix has not indicated when the next Dragon Quest XII update will come. The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Dragon Quest XI S in September 2026 is the nearest confirmed release for series fans.
